The Border Terrier is a low-maintence breed when it comes to grooming and beauty care.

To care for this breed all you need to do is brush their coats and bathe them only when necessary. Border Terriers’ wiry coats need only minimal grooming. Knots rarely appear, but when they do, they should be clipped out and brushed occasionally with a bristle brush that is the ideal type od brush for the breed. The coat on the head, legs, neck and top of tail should be trimmed. When debris gets caught in their coat you will want to remove it as soon as possible to prevent matting and skin irritation from occuring. If you don’t remove it, you will have a day and a half of lip-biting grooming sessions ahead of you…and a growl or two from your beloved dog!

I have some great news for Border Terrier fans and owners. The Border Terrier is one of the healthiest dogs around! It probably stems from their die-hard background; living in highlands between the Scotish and English border. Although it is relatively an old breed- dating back to the 1700’s- , it is still a hardy dog. Ony 2 diseases can be found to plague this dog, and these are: namely: heart problems, luxating patellas, hip dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which develops into blindess. But on the whole, to help with the problem of dysplasia, it is advisable to keep stairs well away from your Border Terrier puppy until the age of 2 years, since stairs have a negative effect on the development of joints and bones.

Why take your dog to the vet if you can give it a check-up yourself?
