The Border Terrier…A very healthy breed!!

D Dog Fan | March 12th, 2008

I have some great news for Border Terrier fans and owners. The Border Terrier is one of the healthiest dogs around! It probably stems from their die-hard background; living in highlands between the Scotish and English border. Although it is relatively an old breed- dating back to the 1700’s- , it is still a hardy dog. Ony 2 diseases can be found to plague this dog, and these are: namely: heart problems, luxating patellas, hip dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which develops into blindess. But on the whole, to help with the problem of dysplasia, it is advisable to keep stairs well away from your Border Terrier puppy until the age of 2 years, since stairs have a negative effect on the development of joints and bones.

Why take your dog to the vet if you can give it a check-up yourself?

  1. Thank you for this website! I just rescued a 3 1/2 month old border terrier/shepherd mix and am grateful to find so much information about this wonderful dog on the internet. One question I had regarding their health is I understand they can be prone to CECS (Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome). Through research and study, it has been determined that the primary cause and contributing factor is dietary. A raw diet for optimum health has been recommended to me by several people who have owned a BT. In addition, it is recommended to avoid any high protein treats and all rawhide, bully sticks, hooves, etc. Do you have any information to offer on the subject and further any suggestions for healthy chewies given this breeds propensity to chew EVERYTHING (especially as pups)? I am grateful for their long life expectancy, but don’t want to risk any challenges to her health due to my own ignorance in these areas. Many thanks for anything you have to offer.
